For more than 40 years, The Marketplace magazine has been providing readers with a unique mixture of profiles, news items, faith-based devotional materials, and reviews. The magazine has showcased MEDA’s work helping to create business solutions to poverty in scores of countries throughout the Global South.
The Marketplace also highlights the challenges and successes of Christian entrepreneurs in a variety of profiles, as well as the issues related to living out faith through everyday work.
In 1980, professor and entrepreneur Cal Redekop, who had been editing a quarterly newsletter for the Church, Industry and Business Association (a group that merged with MEDA), renamed the newsletter The Marketplace. Five years later, Wally Kroeker became the first full-time editor of the magazine, a position he held for 32 years. In 1986, the publication assumed its current bimonthly printing cycle, growing from a few pages to its current size of 24 pages.
The magazine is available either as a print publication or a reader-friendly browsable digital edition.
Mike Strathdee is MEDA’s publications editor and the central writer behind “The Marketplace,” a bi-monthly magazine that explores the connection between faith & business as well as telling stories about MEDA's efforts to create business solutions to poverty.
With over thirty years of experience in journalism and charitable gift planning, Mike contributes expertise to various communications projects at MEDA. His career includes stints as a business writer with the Kitchener Waterloo Record (now the Waterloo Region Record) and as the Stratford Bureau Chief for BX 93 FM. He also worked as a stewardship consultant for Mennonite Foundation of Canada and a gift planning consultant for Abundance Canada.
Mike has a master’s degree in Canadian American relations, with distinction, from Wilfrid Laurier University. He holds the Certified Financial Planner designation and has successfully completed several estate planning and gift planning courses.
