How a retired banker harnessed the power of cassava to improve livelihoods in her village

Angelita Mbatia is a former Director of Financial Markets from the Central Bank of Tanzania. In 2004, she moved from Dar es Salaam to Bwama village, Kisarawe district. Her motivation to move there was clear: she was inspired by Julius Nyerere’s (Tanzania’s first president) philosophy of self-reliance and wanted to apply this philosophy to helping support the Bwama village community.

MEDA staff contribute to latest Agricultural Science Book

MEDA’s Senior Director, Global Program Operations, David Eagle, and MEDA’s Tanzania Country Project Manager, Stephen Magige have contributed to a chapter in the Agricultural Science book, “Root, Tuber and Banana Food System Innovations – Value Creation for Inclusive Outcomes.” Together with other industry experts and partners, they co-wrote Chapter 15, “Commercially Sustainable Cassava Seed Systems in Africa” which outlined how building strong Cassava seed systems creates value for Cassava seed entrepreneurs and their value chains.
