Basma and Ibtisam: long term success (Egypt)

Basma_Egypt

Basma and Ibtisam have been with the Promoting and Protecting the Interests of Children Who Work in Egypt (PPIC-W) programme since it’s very inception; in fact, their family business was one of the early WIF projects.

Their family grocery store is located in the most economically deprived area in Aswan, up a high hill with steep and narrow streets. Their job was to carry the grocery inventory up the hill, which was extremely hazardous for the girls. Their loan allowed their parents to buy a cart, which decreased the physical risks faced by the girls.

With Egyptian Association for Community Initiatives and Development’s (EACID) Business Development Services (BDS) support and regular visits from an EACID business advisor, the girls’ father feels that both his business and his girls have benefited greatly. Both girls are still attending school full time and have taken advantage of PPIC-W participation activities, camps, trips, life skills activities, computer-based learning and photography.

“Now they are able to solve their own problems and are more aware of how to make their life much better”, their father said. He further tells us that an education is valuable for his daughters, as it will help them to positively interact with customers and to better manage the clients’ accounts and the business.
