Ukraine’s economy has been considered “the breadbasket of Europe” because of the country’s rich and fertile soil and it relies heavily on the exports of wheat, industrial equipment, and energy. Since its independence in 1991, the country has undergone strong reforms, but has continuously experienced economic, political, and social challenges, including the Russo-Ukrainian war that began in 2014.
From 2014 to 2002, MEDA worked in Ukraine to improve the incomes of thousands of small scale horticultural small and medium businesses in the southern regions of the country. By providing farmers with access to technology, such as e-commerce platforms, business skills training, market linkages to increase farmers’ yields and incomes, MEDA is improving the horticultural market system for small scale farmers and entrepreneurs in southern Ukraine.
