Jordan | USAID Jordan Local Enterprise Support (LENS)

The USAID Jordan Local Enterprise Support Project (LENS) encourages the long-term economic growth and development potential of underserved Jordanian communities. It brings local governments, business owners, and key community groups to collaborate together on initiatives that will boost economic development and create jobs in their communities.

These initiatives will be focused on supporting the growth of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) and inclusive of women, youth and other vulnerable populations. The project is operating in the governorates of Zarqa, Irbid, Tafilah, Amman, Karak and Aqaba and is partnering with key local stakeholders to ensure successful implementation.Entrepreneurship workshop for women in NaourEntrepreneurship workshop for women in Naour

Over the course of the project, USAID LENS will focus on bringing growth and innovation to local communities through:

  1. Promoting better policies to encourage business and investment;
  2. Supporting local economic development and planning, including working with local government officials to map the resources, assets and capabilities of municipalities and governorates in order to help them attract investment to their communities and facilitate growth;
  3. Encouraging business growth in key sectors, including capacity building of business service providers, including associations and chambers;
  4. Fostering better Access to Finance by working with developmental and micro-finance institutions to improve their service offerings to firms and individuals, as well as helping more MSEs become more eligible to borrow.
  5. Building stronger local networks to encourage economic development, including by creating, strengthening and expanding linkages among and between public and private local institutions.

USAID LENS is implemented by FHI 360 in partnership with a number of specialized organizations, including MEDA. MEDA is specifically responsible for the Access to Finance component.
