MEDA helps to balance relief with recovery
More than a month after the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti, millions there are still struggling to get back on their feet in a country where, even before the earthquake, the per-capita income averaged less than $2 a day. "In the early stages following a disaster," notes Allan Sauder, MEDA president, "survivors need food, water and shelter, but almost immediately they also require ongoing access to cash, savings accounts and remittances from family overseas."

Fonkoze quickly responds to earthquake
While the commercial banks and most MFIs remained closed, Fonkoze opened the majority of its branches the day after the earthquake. Within 10 days, 37 out of 41 branches were open, and within 20 days all 41 branches were open. Although many staff members lost family members
