Sarona Fund enjoys good year despite market turmoil

In spite of a year of turmoil in global financial markets, MEDA's Sarona Risk Capital Fund reports a year of both financial and social success.

During the last year, when the Dow Jones lost 25.6%, and the TSX lost 26.1%, both the Sarona and MicroVest funds grew and posted profits. "A number of investors have told us that they wish they had put all of their capital into our funds," notes Gerhard Pries, president of MEDA Investments. "So do we. There are some soft spots in our portfolio, but the overall positive results at a time of global economic recession give us confidence that our strategies are sound."

The capital managed by MEDA Investments Inc. provided tangible benefits to over one million poor clients in some challenging countries around the world. MEDA Investments believes the future lies in developing countries, in environmental technologies, and in small/medium enterprises. Increasingly, it will be focusing in those directions.

MEDA Investments Inc was created to establish private investment as an effective solution to global poverty – a mission with a double bottom line: financial and social. Now, MEDA's investment arm is strongly focused on delivering a triple bottom line: People, Planet, and Profit.

"In our view, the world looks pretty hopeful," says Gerhard. "Step by step, with creativity and courage, society is moving in a positive direction. Our investment into that future is not only an imperative, but also an opportunity. Our investors' support of that future is a vote of confidence in the poor and in the future of the planet."
