Building Better Lives

SitaraAfghan woman building a better life for her son

Sitara worried about her new baby's future. She knew how hard it was for her growing up in a poor family. The last thing she wanted was for her son to face the same challenges.

But despite her and her husband's best efforts to make their small, home-run, grocery store business successful, they could not escape the grip poverty had on them. Read more about Sitara's family.

ParwanaAfghan intern: "MEDA Afghanistan has changed my life, too!"

MEDA Afghanistan not only changed 2,250 village women’s lives but MINE too. I can’t express how happy I am to have been a part of MEDA in bringing positive economic change. Alleviating poverty is one of the biggest challenges in our country, and my initial goal is to contribute in fighting this challenge. I am really grateful to MEDA for giving me such an opportunity. MEDAs Arbeit in Pakistan (German) - Video of the Month

In order to spread the word in Germany we have translated our extended Pakistan video into German.

In Pakistan, MEDA's Behind the Veil project created an innovative way to link isolated, homebound rural women embroiderers to the country's lucrative high-end and usually urban markets. Through this award-winning program, and working with local partners, more than 9,000 women living in poverty have become successful entrepreneurs, earning their own income, feeding their children, and gaining respect from their family and within their community. Now MEDA is taking this successful value chain approach and applying it elsewhere with Pathways & Pursestrings, a new four-year project. Watch as just a few of these women share their stories.
