Daniel Miller, Walnut Creek, Ohio – MEDA board member

Day job: “Doc Miller” is supposed to be retired, but it hasn’t yet worked out that way. A family practice physician for 38 years, he’s also been deeply immersed in the family business as chair of the Dutchman Hospitality Group, which operates five restaurants (with giftshops) and two inns in Ohio. He’s also on the board of the Wayne Dalton Corporation, a family garage door business, and has spent 30 years on the board of a bank. At some point, he says he’ll have to “re-retire.”
He likes comparing his diverse involvements. “People often complain about regulation in their own field and say to others that ‘you don’t have to deal with that.’ Not true, because every segment of life is more regulated than it used to be. I do enjoy business and I really enjoyed medicine, too.”
Most fun? “The traveling I’ve done with MEDA, and learning to know other businesspeople.” He’s been to Cuba, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Egypt, Paraguay and Nicaragua to visit projects, attend board meetings, and research future MEDA ventures.
“MEDA is exciting because it’s the most innovative agency that I’ve participated in. Creating business mechanisms and strategies to help the poor – to me that’s where it’s at.”
Hobbies: photography, travel (visited Antarctica in January), cutting grass (he owns several tractors). “I grew up on a farm and driving tractors is kind of mind-clearing for me. I mow a lot of grass.”
