What else has changed?

  • In 1987, we were just beginning our first microfinance program in Haiti (75 loans @ $427 each), and MEDA was one of the pioneers of microfinance.
    • Today, microfinance is a global industry with more than 10,000 MFIs providing loans to 100 million clients.
  • In 1987, we had just opened the Discovery Bay Designs factory in Jamaica with 23 employees, now closed.
    • Today, we don't own and operate companies, we try to partner with local companies to help them expand production and marketing. But we are now back in Jamaica doing microfinance in partnership with Scotiabank and a local organization.
  • In 1987, we were just beginning a $3.5 million oxenization project in Tanzania, producing and marketing animal-drawn farm implements.
    • Today, we have just bid on a $100 million extension of our successful insecticide-treated mosquito nets project.
