Offerings to MEDA

MEDA was recognized recently with an offering of $241.70 by an Ohio congregation. The group was responding to a challenge by the peace advocate of the Mennonite Church USA to cut hunger in half by the year 2015 through a gift of seven cents a day from every man, woman and child in America.

The letter enclosed with the donation noted that for the past two months the congregation has given a 50 cent offering to end hunger around the world. “We know that you (MEDA) do this by: providing food during emergencies and famines; training people for jobs and giving them small loans; teaching people about balanced diets, and making farming more productive.”

Many thanks from MEDA – Even a few cents a day can bring dividends of hope!

MEDA chapter plants mustard seed

OlenSomeone did something nice for poor people a few years ago. They invited Olen Hershberger to a meeting of the Denver MEDA Chapter. They probably didn’t realize they were planting a mustard seed.

Olen, who had a long and successful career in industrial management, liked what he saw. He kept coming to chapter meetings, learned more about MEDA’s local and overseas work, and began contributing.

Unfortunately, Olen died a few months ago at the age of 80. Unknown to MEDA at the time, he had left a sizeable bequest in his will so that his desire to help poor people would live on. As a result, hundreds of MEDA clients in Africa and Asia will get a hand up from poverty.

Today, Olen’s generosity and compassion for the poor have a life beyond him, thanks to a mustard seed planted by a local MEDA chapter.
