MEDA is in the final stages of approval for a new project being planned
for farmers in Ethiopia and Zambia. The initiative would help farmers
grow successful yields on parched land with new drip irrigation systems.
The potential project centers around the distribution of irrigation
technology including rain harvest tanks. The tanks collect and hold rain
water on a high point, allowing gravity to feed the drip lines
distributed throughout the field. The drip lines allow water to seep
into the land, feeding it instead of flooding it. The result is an
opportunity to grow a successful crop and feed their families.
And like MEDA's mosquito net project in Tanzania, the new proposed
project would infuse life into the local economy by encouraging
distribution systems and local access. By providing farmers with
discount certificates after attending info sessions, local farmers will
save 75% of the price of irrigation technology at local outlets.
Retailers simply submit redeemed certificates to the project for credit,
encouraging local shops to carry the product. Farmers will achieve
success while the whole economy grows.
Stay tuned! We hope to announce the start of the project soon.
