Zachary Bishop and Christina Alderfer of Denver, Colorado had a creative
flash when they were setting up a gift registry for their wedding June
2: Why not help others in the process?
"We wanted our registry to include an option to donate to charity versus
strictly receiving gifts ourselves," says Zach. So going beyond the
usual merchants such as Williams Sonoma, they worked with MEDA to create
a customized web page on the MEDA Trust site, encouraging others to make
an investment with a difference.
"The response was really positive, with about 15 people donating $1,800
to MEDA Trust," says Zach. "Many enjoyed the thought of giving to MEDA,
and we were able to introduce people to the concept of microfinance
through investing those donations into loans to poor entrepreneurs. It's
really a gift that keeps on giving: As the loans are repaid, you can
sponsor another loan, and watch your investment help a growing pool of
small business owners."
MEDA Trust is a great way to learn about microfinance and the power of
giving. You can create individual or group portfolios for a powerful
learning experience for families and children, classrooms, Sunday school
groups, and more!
