Building Bridges to New Lives for Refugees - Moderator

Thom Dixon, MEDA's Senior Director, Business Partnerships, will moderate the panel discussion at our Friday lunch plenary. The development of partnerships with business is fundamental to MEDA’s strategic plan, drawing on the skills and resources of enterprises large and small as participants with MEDA in solving business problems among companies we serve, leading to benefits for the households and communities they serve.

Thom brings an entrepreneurial approach to this task. As CEO of a food processor in Costa Rica, he learned business skills on the job, growing the bottom line for seven years. As a McKinsey and Company management consultant in Finland, he provided strategic advice on operations questions to large European companies, including turnaround for a Dutch factory employing 800. As a project director in Tanzania, he helped smallholder coffee groups improve quality and supply demanding global coffee roasters. Recognizing the impact of malaria on lives, Thom led a team that mobilized smallholders to grow Artemisia annua and linked them via African entrepreneurs to global pharmaceutical companies, forming a supply chain to deliver leaf extract as feedstock for producing malaria cures. Thom has advised businesses and decision makers in sixteen nations across Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe. Upon joining MEDA five years ago, Thom directed its Business of Health focal area before assuming his current responsibilities aimed at developing new business partnerships. Thom is fluent in Spanish; he holds a B.A. from Earlham College and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School.
