Health Products and Services Markets for the Poor

The PML department applies its business and marketing expertise to design and deliver interventions that harness markets and private-sector infrastructures to achieve timely and cost-effective access by the poor to life-saving health products and services. Existing distribution systems can often provide an efficient and effective way to deliver needed products to poor and remote populations, especially in cash-strapped developing countries with weak public health systems.

Project Highlight

Tanzania National Voucher Scheme
MEDA’s Hati Punguzo program reduces the incidence of malaria in Tanzania among pregnant women, young children and their families. In this successful project, we assure distribution of approximately 1.2 million insecticide treated mosquito nets (ITNs) and 2.4 million insecticide retreatments to pregnant women by providing them with a discount voucher during their initial visit to a pre-natal clinic. Vouchers are redeemed by the women at nearby local retail shops, thereby achieving the targeted coverage of ITNs and establishing a sustainable commercial ITN distribution network.
