Thinking Outside the Islamic Box: Linking Context and Credit in Muslim West Africa
An article in the Critical Half: Annual Journal of Women for Women International
Growing Western interest in Islam, particularly as it relates to the
rights and identity of women, has prompted much discussion about the
role of Islam in development programs. Although Islam is the dominant
religion in many countries in West Africa, community support, class,
ethnicity, language, and gender divisions of labor play a far greater
role in women's access to, and participation in, credit and
financial-service programs. This report examines microfinance in Muslim
West African villages, the relevance of Islamic banking, and factors
that influence women's access to financial services.
